Aaron “Anthony” Maney was born in Tennessee in approximately 1856.[i] It is unknown where Aaron was enslaved prior to emancipation. Lewis Maney enslaved one four-year old male in 1860, so it is possible that Aaron was enslaved by Lewis prior to emancipation.[ii] It is unknown who Aaron’s parents were, so it is difficult to determine if he also lived with his family on the Maney plantation (present day Oaklands Mansion). In 1860, Edwin Keeble was the only other member of the Maney family to enslave a child the same age as Aaron, so it also is feasible that Aaron was enslaved on the Keeble plantation.[iii] Since there is very little information known about Aaron’s family, it could be that Aaron was not enslaved on either of the Maney’s plantations.
It is unknown what happened to Aaron immediately following the Civil War as he does not appear in the 1870 census. Aaron Maney married Amanda Grimes on March 22, 1878 in Rutherford County, Tennessee.[iv] It is unknown how or when Aaron and Amanda met. Following their marriage, Aaron and Amanda had one son, Samuel Maney, in 1879.[v] Aaron worked as a general laborer in 1880, though it is uncertain for whom he was employed.[vi] Aaron and Amanda had two more children in 1883 and 1887: Mamie and Tom Maney.[vii] Aaron died between 1887 and 1900 as Amanda “Mandy” is widowed in 1900.[viii] There are no death records for Aaron Maney, so it is unknown when he died or where he is buried.
Following Aaron’s death, Amanda rented a home in Rutherford County and worked as a servant to support her three children.[ix] It is unknown where Amanda lived or worked in 1910. There is one Mandy Maney working as a cook for Jim Sneed in Rutherford County, but there are no further documents to support that this is the same Amanda “Mandy” Maney.[x] By 1920, Amanda moved into Sam’s home where she worked as a cook for a private family in Rutherford County.[xi] Amanda likely died after 1920 as there are no further records of her life.
Children of Aaron “Anthony” and Amanda Grimes Maney
Sam Maney
December 14, 1901
Sam Maney was the oldest son of Aaron and Amanda (Grimes) Maney.[xii] In 1900, Samuel “Sam” Maney lived with his mother and siblings and worked as a farmer in Rutherford County.[xiii] It is unknown for whom Sam worked in 1900. Sam married Janie Baird on December 14, 1901 in Rutherford County.[xiv] By 1910, Sam and Janie had purchased a home in Murfreesboro and had three daughters: Victoria, Lucille, and Sarah.[xv] Sam continued working as a farmer for a general farm, and the census record indicates that Sam was an employer for the farm.[xvi] Janie worked as a laundress.[xvii] Sam and Janie had one more daughter, Luvada Maney, in 1912.[xviii] In 1920, Sam lived with his wife, children, and mother at his home on Halls Hill Road and worked as a farmer.[xix] Janie and Sam’s children were each unemployed.[xx] Sam Maney died on August 26, 1921 of tuberculosis.[xxi] Sam was buried in Cedar Grove Cemetery in Murfreesboro.[xxii]
Mamie Maney McKnight
Mamie (Maney) McKnight was the oldest daughter of Aaron and Amanda (Grimes) Maney.[xxiii] Mamie married Sam McKnight in Rutherford County on January 9, 1905.[xxiv] Following their marriage, Sam and Mamie had one daughter: Susan McKnight.[xxv] In 1910, Sam and Mamie rented a home in Rutherford County and both worked as farm laborers.[xxvi] Sam and Mamie had two more children in 1914 and 1916: Sam T. and Isla McKnight.[xxvii] In 1920, Mamie no longer worked, and Sam continued working as a farm laborer.[xxviii] Sam and Mamie had one more child in 1922, Gennie Estella McKnight.[xxix] By 1930, Sam and Mamie had purchased their home on Halls Hill Road.[xxx] Mamie found employment as a laundress for a private family and Sam maintained his position as a farm laborer in Murfreesboro.[xxxi] By 1940, Sam and Mamie’s children had moved out, and both maintained their employment positions.[xxxii] Sam McKnight died on January 12, 1964 and was buried at Cedar Grove Cemetery in Murfreesboro.[xxxiii] Mamie McKnight died at the age of one-hundred-one on January 12, 1985.[xxxiv]
Thomas Maney

Thomas Maney was the youngest son of Aaron and Amanda (Grimes) Maney.[xxxv] On January 16, 1909, Thomas Maney married Della Teal in Rutherford County, Tennessee.[xxxvi] Following his marriage, Thomas and Della rented a home in Murfreesboro, Tennessee.[xxxvii] Thomas worked as a laborer for the railroad while Della found employment as a cook for a private family.[xxxviii] On October 22, 1916, Della delivered a stillborn child in Rutherford County.[xxxix] Della Maney died on May 24, 1923 in Chicago, Illinois.[xl] It is unknown when Thomas and Della moved to Illinois. After Della’s death, Thomas moved back to Murfreesboro and remarried. Thomas married Lizzie Rucker on August 12, 1928.[xli] Following his marriage, Thomas and Lizzie had two children in 1929 and 1930: J.T. and Sam Maney.[xlii] Thomas also adopted Lizzie’s daughter, Mildred Rucker Maney.[xliii] Thomas rented a home next to his sister, Mamie McKnight, and worked as a farmer.[xliv] Thomas and Lizzie had three more children between 1930 and 1940: Andrew W., Joe D., and Dorothy A. Maney.[xlv] By 1940, Thomas and Lizzie had moved to Smyrna and rented a home on Sam Davis Highway.[xlvi] It is unknown when Thomas and Lizzie moved to Smyrna or why they moved. Thomas worked as a farmer while Lizzie found work as a housekeeper in Smyrna.[xlvii] Tom Maney died in Smyrna on January 27, 1965 of bilateral terminal pneumonia.[xlviii] Thomas was moved to Murfreesboro to be buried at Cedar Grove Cemetery.[xlix]
