Anthony Maney was born in Tennessee in approximately 1824.[i] There is very little known information about Anthony Maney. It is unknown where Anthony was enslaved prior to emancipation. Lewis Maney enslaved one individual who was approximately the same age as Anthony in 1860.[ii] Dr. James Maney also enslaved a man approximately Anthony’s age in 1860.[iii] Therefore it is feasible that Anthony was enslaved on the Maney’s plantation (present day Oaklands Mansion) by either Lewis or James Maney. However, David Maney also enslaved two individuals approximately Anthony’s age, so it is also possible that Anthony was enslaved on David Maney’s plantation.[iv] As a thirty-six-year-old male on a Maney plantation, Anthony likely worked as a farm laborer.

December 26, 1878
It is unknown where Anthony lived immediately following emancipation. Anthony Maney married Julia Smith on December 26, 1878 in Rutherford County, Tennessee.[v] Julia Hall Smith Maney had previously married Ananias Smith on August 23, 1865 in Rutherford County.[vi] Julia and Ananias had seven children by 1870: Narcis, Nancy, Ed, James, Andrew, Simon, and David Smith.[vii] It is unknown what happened to Ananias Smith, but he likely died shortly after 1870. Upon marrying Julia Smith, Anthony adopted her three youngest sons: Andrew, Simon, and David.[viii] Henry Maney is also living with Julia and Anthony, so it is possible that Julia had one more child before Ananias’ death.[ix] Anthony worked as a farm laborer while Julia worked at home “keeping house.”[x] There are no further known records for Anthony or his family. It is unknown when he died or what happened to his adopted children.
