Cherry Maney was born in Tennessee in approximately 1860.[i] It is uncertain if Cherry was born before the outbreak of the Civil War. Lewis Maney enslaved a one-year-old child who could possibly be Cherry.[ii] Both Lewis and David Maney enslaved individuals who were the same age as Cherry’s family members, so it is possible that Cherry and her family were enslaved at either plantation.[iii] Cherry’s experience as an enslaved African American living in Murfreesboro was very different from many others as she would have no memories of life before the Civil War.

Marriage License for
Cherry Maney and Robert Hatton
January 11, 1883

Following the Civil War, Cherry lived in Murfreesboro, Tennessee with her parents, Matilda and John Maney, and her siblings.[iv] Cherry Maney attended school, not having to work to help support her family.[v] It is uncertain where Cherry attended school following the Civil War. By 1880, Cherry lived with her mother worked as a house maid, though it is still uncertain where Cherry was employed.[vi] Cherry Maney married Robert Hatton on January 11, 1883 in Rutherford County, Tennessee.[vii] In 1900, Cherry and Robert rented a home in Murfreesboro and had four children – James M., Robert S. Jr., Waverly S., and Eddie Hatton.[viii] Cherry was employed as a laundress and Robert worked as a janitor for the local railway station.[ix] Robert died between 1900 and 1910, and Cherry moved with three of her children to Minnesota.[x] Cherry was unemployed upon moving to Minnesota; however, all her sons were employed and likely helped support Cherry.[xi] By 1930, Cherry lived with her son, Edward “Eddie” Hatton, and worked as a matron for a local department store.[xii] Cherry died February 16, 1932 in Ramsey, Minnesota.[xiii]

Children of Cherry (Maney) and Robert Hatton

James M. Hatton

Marriage Announcement
James Hatton and Mable Johnson
December 13, 1913, The Appeal, St. Paul, Minnesota

James M. Hatton was the son of Cherry (Maney) and Robert Hatton. He was born in Tennessee in approximately 1884.[xiv] James went to school in Murfreesboro, but he also worked part-time at the local lumberyard.[xv] By 1910, James had moved to Minnesota with his mother and worked as a waiter for the railway.[xvi] James likely worked to help support his mother, who was unemployed upon moving to Minnesota.
On December 17, 1913, James moved to Missouri and married Mable Johnson.[xvii] James and Mable lived with her parents and had a daughter – Francis Hatton.[xviii] James continued working as a waiter for a railway station.[xix] James maintained his position throughout the 1930s.[xx] By 1940, James lived with his daughter and worked as a messenger for a radio station.[xxi] Mable Hatton died on October 23, 1938.[xxii] James Hatton died February 17, 1957 in St. Louis, Missouri.[xxiii]

Robert S. Hatton Jr.

Robert Hatton was the son of Cherry (Maney) and Robert Hatton. He was born in Tennessee in approximately 1886.[xxiv] By 1910, Robert moved to Minnesota with his family and worked as a waiter for a railway company.[xxv] Robert died on March 19, 1912 in Ramsey County, Minnesota.[xxvi] It does not appear that Robert ever married or had any children.

Waverly S. Hatton

Marriage certificate for
Waverly S. Hatton and Miss Hattie L. Langford

Waverly S. Hatton was the son of Cherry (Maney) and Robert Hatton. He was born in Tennessee in approximately 1889.[xxvii] Although Waverly’s mother and three brothers moved to Minnesota after his father’s death, it appears that Waverly remained in Tennessee. In 1914, Waverly lived in Nashville and worked as a “clothes cleaner.”[xxviii] Eventually, Waverly moved to Licking, Ohio, where he married Hattie Langford on December 17, 1918.[xxix] Waverly and Hattie rented a home in Ohio, and Waverly found employment as a cook for a railroad company.[xxx] By 1930, Waverly purchased a home and continued working for the railroad office as a janitor.[xxxi] Waverly died on September 28, 1946 in Concord, New Hampshire.[xxxii] Waverly’s death certificate indicates that he was divorced and working as a cook at the time of his death.[xxxiii] It is uncertain when Waverly moved to New Hampshire or when he divorced his wife. It does not appear that Waverly had children before his death.

Edward “Eddie” Hatton

Edward “Eddie” Hatton was the son of Cherry (Maney) and Robert Hatton. He was born in Tennessee in approximately 1890.[xxxiv] By 1910, Edward moved to Minnesota with his mother and two older brothers. He found work as a porter for a wholesale music company.[xxxv] Edward married Mabel Moffat on October 9, 1914 in Ramsey, Minnesota.[xxxvi] Edward and Mable rented a home in Ramsey, Minnesota and had two children between 1915 and 1917 – Edward S. and Annette Hatton.[xxxvii] Edward continued working for a retail music store as a “repair man.”[xxxviii] By 1930, Edward purchased a home in Minnesota where he lived with his wife, two children, and mother.[xxxix] In 1930, Edward was still employed as a repair man for a radio store.[xl] The 1940 census reveals that Edward was still working as a repairman for a department store and lived with his wife and children.[xli] Edward and Mable’s children also were employed: Edward Hatton Jr. worked at a depot terminal; Annette Hatton worked as a stenographer at the state capitol.[xlii] Edward Hatton died on February 2, 1949 in Ramsey, Minnesota.[xliii]
