Fanny Maney was born in approximately 1855 in Tennessee.[i] It is unknown where Fanny was enslaved prior to emancipation. Lewis Maney was the only member of the Maney family to have enslaved a child Fanny’s age in 1860.[ii] It is probable that Fanny was enslaved on the Maney plantation (present day Oaklands Mansion) prior to the Civil War. Other members of the Maney family also enslaved children who were approximately Fanny’s age in 1860.[iii] Based on 1860 records, Fanny could have been enslaved on any of the Maney plantations. There are no records known of Fanny’s family, so it is difficult to determine where Fanny lived during the Civil War.
Following the Civil War, Fanny lived with the Knight and Clayton families in Murfreesboro.[iv] Fanny lived in the Knight household as a domestic servant.[v] Fanny is not listed with any known family members, so it is possible that she had been separated from her family by the slave trade. Despite being only ten years old at the end of the Civil War, Fanny’s position as a domestic servant in 1870 indicates that she likely worked as a domestic servant prior to emancipation. There are no further known records for Fanny Maney. It is unknown what happened to Fanny after 1870.
