George Maney was born in approximately 1838 in Tennessee.[i] It is unknown where George was enslaved prior to emancipation. Lewis Maney was the only member of the Maney family to have enslaved an individual George’s age in 1860.[ii] Therefore, George was most likely enslaved on the Maney plantation (present day Oaklands Mansion) prior to the Civil War. There are several individuals enslaved on Edwin Keeble’s plantation with a similar age, so it also is possible that George was enslaved by Edwin Keeble and his name was misrepresented in census records.[iii]

Marriage Record for George Maney and Hester Bell
December 5, 1865

George Maney married Hester Bell on December 5, 1865 in Rutherford County, Tennessee.[iv] Following their marriage, George and Hester moved into a home in Murfreesboro, Tennessee.[v] A ten-year-old girl, Lizzie Maney, lived in the same household with George and Hester.[vi] It is likely that Lizzie was George and Hester’s daughter; however, this relationship is not confirmed in census records. George worked as a day laborer, though it is unknown by whom he was employed.[vii] There are no further known records for George Maney. It is unknown what happened to George after 1870.
