Jo Maney was born in Tennessee in approximately 1856.[i] It is uncertain where Jo Maney was enslaved before and during the Civil War. Lewis Maney enslaved a four-year-old male in 1860, which correlates with Jo Maney’s age in 1860.[ii] Edwin A. Keeble, son-in-law of Dr. James Maney, also owned a four-year-old male.[iii] There are also several children approximately the same age as Jo Maney and his siblings owned by David D. Maney, but the ages are not exactly the same as reported in 1870.[iv] It is also possible that only Jo Maney’s father was enslaved by the Maney family, and Jo, his mother, and siblings were enslaved by another family in Murfreesboro. As a young child, it is unknown what Jo’s responsibilities would have been on the plantation.

There is very little information about Jo Maney after the Civil War. After the Civil War, Jo Maney lived in Murfreesboro with Dempsey and Betsy Maney.[v] It is likely that these are Jo’s parents, but the census record does not specify this relationship. Despite being only fourteen in 1870, Jo Maney worked as a farm laborer, not attending school.[vi] Nothing else is known about Jo Maney.
