Elizabeth “Lizzie” Maney was born in Tennessee in approximately 1844.[i] It is uncertain where Lizzie was enslaved prior to the Civil War. Her maiden name was “James” prior to her marriage in 1866.[ii] There are several James families living in Rutherford county, but A.B. James was the only person who had enslaved someone the same age as Lizzie Maney.[iii] It is uncertain what Lizzie’s specific role was on the James’ plantation. Later in her life, Lizzie found work as a laundress, so it is possible that Lizzie worked within her master’s home, not on the fields.[iv]

After the Civil War, Lizza [sic] James married Giles Maney on July 25, 1866.[v] Lizzie Maney lived with Giles in Rutherford County in 1870 where she worked “keeping house.”[vi] Giles Maney died in 1880, leaving Lizzie widowed with one child, Jimmi Maney.[vii] Lizzie found work as a wash woman, but it is uncertain where Lizzie was employed.[viii] Lizzie remarried to Charlie Johns on July 25, 1888.[ix] It is uncertain how Lizzie and Charlie met or if Charlie had any children before marrying Lizzie. Charlie and Lizzie continued living in Murfreesboro after their marriage, but Jimmi was no longer living with Lizzie.[x] Lizzie worked as a laundress while Charlie was a farm laborer when they purchased a home on Main Street.[xi] Charlie Johns died on May 21, 1910 in Murfreesboro.[xii] It is uncertain what happened to Lizzie after Charlie’s death in 1910.
