Lucy Maney was born in Tennessee in approximately 1858.[i] It is uncertain exactly where Lucy was enslaved prior to emancipation. In 1860, Lewis Maney enslaved several individuals who were the same age as Lucy and her family, so it is possible that Lucy was enslaved at the Maney plantation (present day Oaklands Mansion) prior to the Civil War.[ii] However, David D. Maney also enslaved individuals who were the same age as Lucy and her family, so it is also feasible that Lucy was enslaved on David’s plantation.[iii] Lucy was just two-years-old at the start of the Civil War.

Marriage Record – August 7, 1879, W. L. Gannaway to Lucy Maney

Following the Civil War, Lucy lived with her parents, Matilda and John Maney, and her siblings in Murfreesboro, Tennessee.[iv] At the age of twelve, Lucy attended school and did not have to work to help support her family.[v] It is unknown where Lucy attended school. Lucy married W.L. Gannaway on August 7, 1879 in Rutherford County, Tennessee.[vi] Lucy and “Lonas” Gannaway had one son, Eldridge Gannaway, in November 1879.[vii] Lucy worked “keeping house” while W.L. worked as a “laborer,”[viii] Lucy died on November 3, 1881 in Murfreesboro, Tennessee.[ix] Lucy’s death record indicated that she worked as a servant before her death.[x]

Following Lucy’s death, William Ganaway married Laura Watson on September 2, 1888 in Louisville, Kentucky.[xi] Upon first arriving in Kentucky, William found work as a Pullman porter.[xii] By 1910, William had found employment as a driver for a local book store in Louisville.[xiii] William took a final position as a janitor by 1920, a position he held until his death.[xiv] William Ganaway died on March 12, 1933 of cardiac hypertrophy and was buried in Louisville, Kentucky.[xv]

Eldridge Gannaway was the only child of Lucy (Maney) and William Gannaway.[xvi] Eldridge moved to Louisville, Kentucky after his mother’s death and lived with his father and step-mother, Laura.[xvii] At the age of twenty, Eldridge lived with his father and step-mother and attended school.[xviii] It is unknown where Eldridge earned his education. By 1910, Eldridge found employment as a railway porter.[xix] Eldridge remained unmarried and lived with his father.[xx] Eldridge married Harriet Lipscomb on January 20, 1918 in Louisville, Kentucky.[xxi] Eldridge was employed as a bartender when he married in 1918.[xxii] Eldridge and Harriet had a daughter, Mary E. Gannaway, by 1921.[xxiii] Eldridge purchased a home by 1930 and found employment as a laborer in an iron foundry.[xiv] Eldridge and Harriet continued to live in Louisville, Kentucky through 1940.[xxv] Eldridge worked as a laborer, and Harriet worked as a maid for a private family.[xxvi] Eldridge Gannaway died in Louisville, Kentucky on August 16, 1959.[xxvii]
