Matilda Maney was born in approximately 1855 in Tennessee.[i] It is unknown where Matilda was enslaved prior to emancipation. Lewis Maney is the only member of the Maney family to have enslaved an individual Matilda’s age in 1860.[ii] Therefore, it is possible that Matilda was enslaved on the Maney plantation (present day Oaklands Mansion) prior to the Civil War.
Following the Civil War, Matilda lived and worked in the Burton household.[iii] Matilda worked as a domestic servant for John W. Burton.[iv] Matilda worked with several older African American domestic servants.[v] There are no further known records for Matilda Maney. It is unknown what happened to Matilda after 1870.
