Matilda Maney was born in Tennessee in approximately 1858.[i] It is uncertain where Matilda Maney was enslaved during the Civil War. David D. Maney had an enslaved girl that was three years old in 1860, which was approximately the same age as Matilda Maney, and Lewis Maney had several young, enslaved girls living on his plantation.[ii] It is possible that Matilda lived at one of these two plantations, but there are no records indicating that she was enslaved on either plantation.

Matilda Maney was likely the daughter of Dempsey and Betsy Maney, but the 1870 census does not specify this relationship.[iii] Despite being only twelve-years-old, Matilda was working as a farm laborer in 1870.[iv] It is uncertain where Matilda was employed in 1870. Matilda Maney married Andrew Turner in Rutherford County on April 2, 1881.[v] It is uncertain what happened to Matilda Maney Turner after her marriage in 1881.
