Matilda White was born in approximately 1851 in Tennessee.[i] It is unknown where Matilda was enslaved prior to emancipation. There is an M. White who lived in Murfreesboro, Tennessee and enslaved a girl Matilda’s age in 1860.[ii] This most likely is where Matilda was enslaved during the Civil War. Dr. James Maney and David Maney both enslaved a young girl approximately Matilda’s age in 1860, so it is possible, however unlikely, that Matilda was enslaved on the Maney plantation (present day Oaklands Mansion) prior to the Civil War.[iii]

Matilda White married Spence Maney on July 1, 1898 in Murfreesboro, Tennessee.[iv] Following their marriage, Matilda and Spence moved into a home in Murfreesboro, Tennessee.[v] There is an Ida Maney living in Matilda’s household in 1870.[vi] It is unknown how Ida is related to Spence and Matilda. It is possible that Ida is Spence and Matilda’s daughter; however, her failure to be included in future census records indicates that Ida either died or was not related to Matilda. Matilda found employment as a farm laborer, though it is unknown for whom she worked.[vii] By 1880, Matilda and Spence had three children: George, Brunetta, and John Maney.[viii] Matilda found employment as a laundress in 1880.[ix] Matilda died in Murfreesboro on September 17, 1881.[x]
