Sallie Maney was born in approximately 1852 in Tennessee.[i] It is unknown where Sallie was enslaved prior to emancipation. Dr. James Maney enslaved a young girl Sallie’s age in 1860, so it is feasible that Sallie was enslaved on the Maney plantation (present day Oaklands Mansion) during the Civil War.[ii] Edwin Keeble and David D. Maney also enslaved eight-year-old children in 1860, so it is also possible that Sallie was enslaved on one of these plantations.[iii] Sallie’s inferred mother, Matilda Maney, was not definitively enslaved by the Maney family. It is unknown where Matilda Maney was enslaved during the Civil War, but it is possible that Sallie was enslaved with Matilda outside the Maney plantation.
Following the Civil War, Sallie lived in a home in Murfreesboro, Tennessee.[iv] Sallie lived with Matilda Maney and two other younger children: Martha and Jack Maney.[v] It is unknown if this was Sallie’s mother and siblings or how Sallie knew these individuals. Sallie found employment as a nurse, though it is unknown where she was employed.[vi] There are no further known records for Sallie Maney. It is unknown what happened to Sallie after 1870.
