There is not much information known about Willie. The only record of Willie’s life is Hardy Murfree’s estate settlement in 1814. Upon Hardy Murfree’s death, the court divided his estate and slave holdings amongst his surviving family. In 1814, Willie (last name unknown) was listed amongst Hardy Murfree’s slave holdings.[i] The court placed Willie under Dr. James Maney’s possession.[ii] Willie was not listed alongside any family members.[iii] It is unknown if Willie was separated from his family as a result of the estate settlement. The court placed a monetary value on Willie, stating that his estimated value on the slave market was four-hundred dollars.[iv] Willie likely traveled with Dr. James to Murfreesboro, Tennessee following the estate settlement. Willie’s age at the time of the estate settlement is unknown, and there are no further records of Willie’s life.
