Calvin Maney was born in approximately 1850 in Tennessee.[i] It is unknown where Calvin was enslaved prior to emancipation. David D. Maney was the only member of the Maney family to enslave a young woman approximately the same age as Calvin, so it is most likely that Calvin was enslaved on David Maney’s plantation.[ii] Edwin Keeble also enslaved a young woman approximately Calvin’s age in 1860.[iii] Therefore, it is also possible that Calvin was enslaved on Edwin Keeble’s plantation prior to emancipation.

Following the Civil War, Calvin moved into a home in Murfreesboro, Tennessee.[iv] Calvin lived in the same household as Nathan Maney, Winston Holden, and Alia Holden.[v] It is unknown how Calvin knew the Holdens or if Nathan and Calvin were related. Calvin and Nathan were likely enslaved on the same plantation. Calvin worked as a farm hand, though it is unknown for whom she was employed.[vi] There are no further known records for Calvin. It is unknown what happened to her after 1870.
