Henderson Maney was born in North Carolina in approximately 1841.[i] Henderson’s birthplace does not remain consistent in the United States Census, so it is difficult to know exactly where Henderson was born and enslaved. It is uncertain when Henderson arrived in Murfreesboro, Tennessee or where he was enslaved by the Maney family. Henderson Maney found work as a farm laborer after the Civil War, so he was likely a field hand on the Maney plantation prior to emancipation.[ii]

Following the Civil War, Henderson Maney found a home in Murfreesboro and moved in with his family.[iii] It is uncertain if Henderson’s family was all enslaved at the same plantation or if this was the first time the family was able to live in the same house together. Henderson married Lovena Maney in 1865.[iv] Henderson and Lovena had three children prior to their marriage in 1865 – Susan, Sarah, and John Maney.[v] Henderson found work as a farm laborer, though it is unknown who employed him.[vi] Henderson and his family continued to live and work in Murfreesboro throughout his life. Henderson had two more children between 1870 and 1880 – Louisa and Jennie Maney – and found general work as a day laborer.[vii] By 1900, Henderson worked as a farm laborer once again.[viii] By 1900, Henderson and Lovena had eight children, but only four had survived into 1900.[ix] There are no further records for Henderson Maney. It is uncertain when Henderson died or where he is buried.
