Lovena Maney was born in Tennessee in approximately 1844.[i] It is uncertain where Lovena was enslaved in Murfreesboro. A death certificate for Lovena’s daughter gives her maiden name as Reedey [sic], so it is possible that Lovena was enslaved by the Ready family in Murfreesboro.[ii] There are records of a C. Ready living near James Maney who enslaved a young woman the same age as Lovena.[iii] This proximity to the Maney family may be how Lovena met her future husband, Henderson.

Immediately following the Civil War, Lovena Reedy married Henderson Maney and found a home in Murfreesboro.[iv] Lovena and Henderson had three children before 1870 – Susan, Sarah, and John Maney.[v] Lovena worked “keeping house.”[vi] Between 1870 and 1880, Lovena had two more children – Louisa and Jennie.[vii] Lovena was still at able to stay at home with her children “keeping house.”[viii] Before the end of her life, Lovena had eight children, but only four of her children survived to 1900.[ix] It is uncertain how Lovena’s children died before reaching adulthood. Lovena Maney moved in with her daughter, Sarah, in Giles County, Tennessee after Sarah married.[x] There are no further records of Lovena Maney’s life. It is uncertain how or when Lovena died and where she is buried.
Children of Lovena (Reedy) and Henderson Maney
Susan Maney
Susan Maney was the oldest daughter of Lovena and Henderson Maney.[xi] Susan was born during the Civil War before her parents married.[xii] It is possible that Susan was adopted by Henderson Maney and was born under the name Matilda. A woman named Matilda Ready worked as a washwoman and lived with Lovena and Henderson Maney.[xiii] Lovena’s maiden name was Ready, so it is possible that Matilda was born on the Ready plantation.[xiv] There is no further information that is known about Susan Maney.
Sarah Maney Todd

Sarah Maney was the second daughter of Lovena and Henderson Maney.[xv] Sarah Maney attended school in Murfreesboro and did not have to work to help support her family.[xvi] Sarah Maney married James Todd on March 19, 1891 in Rutherford County.[xvii] It is uncertain how Sarah and James met or where they lived immediately after their marriage. By 1910, Sarah and James lived in Giles County, Tennessee.[xviii] Sarah worked “washing and ironing” at home while her husband James was a laborer for a mill in Giles County.[xix] Sarah had seven children living at home with her – Mary, Henderson, Jesse, Bessie, Matthew, Roberta, and Harrison Todd.[xx] The 1920 census indicated that Sarah and James continued living in Giles County along with their children and her mother.[xxi] Sarah continued working as a laundress at home, and James worked as a grader for a lumber mill.[xxii] Sarah Maney Todd died on June 7, 1930 of heart failure and was buried in Giles County.[xxiii]
John Maney

John Maney was the oldest son of Lovena and Henderson Maney.[xxiv] John Maney attended school in Murfreesboro and did not have to work to help support his family.[xxv] It is not certain what happened to John Maney between 1880 and 1915. On August 9, 1915, John Maney married Eva Yarbrough in Rutherford County, Tennessee.[xxvi] It is unknown how John and Eva met or if either had been married prior to their marriage in 1915. John and Eva lived in Rutherford County in 1920 where John worked as a farmer for a general farm.[xxvii] John Maney continued living in Rutherford County and worked as a farmer through 1930.[xxviii] John Maney died on November 27, 1931 in Rutherford County.[xxix] It does not appear that John Maney ever had any children.
Louisa Maney
Louisa Maney was the daughter of Lovena and Henderson Maney.[xxx] There are no known records for Louisa Maney beyond the 1880 census.
Jennie Maney Moore
Jennie was the daughter of Lovena and Henderson Maney.[xxxi] Jennie Maney married Rufus Moore on April 17, 1893 in Rutherford County, Tennessee.[xxxii] Rufus and Jennie lived with Henderson and Lovena in 1900 and had two daughters – Levinia and Mary.[xxxiii] Jennie was unemployed, but Rufus worked as a stationed fireman.[xxxiv] There are no further records for Jennie Maney Moore after 1900.
Ella Maney
Ella Maney is the youngest daughter of Lovena and Henderson Maney.[xxxv] There are no further records for Ella Maney.
