Joseph Maney was born in Tennessee in approximately 1845.[i] It is unknown where Joseph was enslaved prior to emancipation. David D. Maney enslaved several African American boys who were approximately Joseph’s age in 1860.[ii] David Maney is the only member of the Maney family to have enslaved an individual closest to Joseph’s age, so it is most likely that Joseph was enslaved on David Maney’s plantation. James Maney enslaved a young man a few years older than Joseph’s purported age, so it is possible that Joseph’s age was misrepresented in the census records, and he was enslaved on the Maney plantation (present day Oaklands Mansion).[iii] Since there is very little information known about Joseph Maney’s family during the Civil War, it is also possible that Joseph was not enslaved by the Maney family in 1860.

Marriage Record of Joseph Maney and Narcissa Smith
December 26, 1972

It is unknown where Joseph Maney lived immediately following the Civil War. Joseph Maney married Narcissa Smith, daughter of Julia Smith Maney, on December 26, 1872 in Rutherford County, Tennessee.[iv] Following their marriage, Joseph and Narcissa had two children: Ella and William Maney.[v] Census records also indicate that Joseph and Narcissa adopted two children by 1880: Harriet and Martha.[vi] It is unknown how Joseph knew the two girls or when they were adopted by the family. Joseph found employment as a general laborer, though it is unknown where he was employed.[vii] Joseph’s employment allowed him and his brother, Aaron Anthony Maney, to purchase a home in Rutherford County, Tennessee in April 1883.[viii] Joseph and his family lived on his farm in Rutherford County where he and his wife had three more children: Joseph, Carrie, and Annie May Maney.[ix] By 1900, Joseph and several of his children were employed as farm laborers, though it is unknown where they were employed.[x] By 1910, Joseph was renting a home in Murfreesboro, Tennessee.[xi] It is unknown why Joseph no longer owned the home he purchased with his brother or when he lost ownership of the home. Joseph remained employed as a farm laborer.[xii] Joseph likely died shortly after 1910. There are no further records of Joseph Maney’s life, and it is unknown when he died or where he is buried. Narcissa Maney died on December 16, 1945 of pneumonia and was buried in a family cemetery.[xiii]
