Lucy (Burke) Maney was born in approximately 1853 in Tennessee.[i] It is unknown where Lucy was enslaved prior to emancipation. Lewis Maney was the only member of the Maney family to enslave a girl Lucy’s age in 1860.[ii] It is likely that Lucy was enslaved on the Maney plantation (present day Oaklands Mansion) during the Civil War. It is also possible that Lucy was enslaved by a family other than the Maneys.

Following the Civil War, Lucy Burke married David Maney on December 1, 1869 in Rutherford County, Tennessee.[iii] After their marriage, David and Lucy moved into a home in Murfreesboro, Tennessee.[iv] Lucy and David lived in the same household with Wally and Wm Maney.[v] It is unknown how Lucy and David were related to Wally and Wm as they do not appear in David’s household after 1870. By 1880, Lucy and David had two children: Minnie and Luke Maney.[vi] Lucy worked at keeping house for her children and mother while David worked as a blacksmith.[vii] By 1900, Lucy found employment washing and ironing, though it is unknown where she was employed.[viii] David was unemployed, so Lucy served as the primary wage earner for her family.[ix] David likely died between 1900 and 1910 as he is not counted in further census records. Following her husband’s death, Lucy moved into her daughter’s home and was unemployed.[x] Lucy likely died shortly after 1910. It is unknown how or when Lucy died.

Minnie (Maney) Brewer Curren was the oldest daughter of David and Lucy (Burke) Maney.[xi] In 1880, Minnie attended school and did not have to work to help support her family.[xii] On October 11, 1894, Minnie Maney married James Brewer in Rutherford County, Tennessee.[xiii] Following their marriage, Minnie and James lived with Minnie’s parents in their home on Stone Street.[xiv] Minnie worked washing and ironing while James worked as a barber.[xv] It is unknown what happened to James Brewer after 1900. On April 15, 1909, Minnie Brewer remarried to Daniel Curren.[xvi] After their marriage, Minnie and Daniel purchased a home on Jackson Street in Murfreesboro, Tennessee.[xvii] In 1910, Minnie worked as a laundress for a private family while Daniel worked as a night watchman for the local college.[xviii] Minnie and Daniel maintained their positions through 1920.[xix] It is unknown what happened to Daniel after 1920. By 1930, Minnie was widowed and boarded in James Patterson’s home.[xx] While boarding at the Patterson home, Minnie continued working as a laundress.[xxi] Minnie Curren died in Nashville, Tennessee on November 9, 1952.[xxii] Minnie died of an intestinal obstruction and was buried at Greenwood Cemetery in Nashville.[xxiii]

Luke Maney was the youngest child of David and Lucy (Burke) Maney.[xxiv] Luke Maney married Ada Sykes on March 31, 1898 in Rutherford County, Tennessee.[xxv] Following their marriage, Luke and Ada lived with Luke’s parents in their home on Stone Street.[xxvi] The census indicates that Luke and Ada had one child after their marriage who did not survive infancy.[xxvii] Luke found employment as a blacksmith, following his father’s example, while Ada worked as a laundress.[xxviii] By 1910, Luke owned a home on Spring Street in Murfreesboro and had his own blacksmith shop.[xxix] Luke and Ada had three children: Annie Lee, David, and Mary Louise Maney.[xxx] Luke and Ada maintained their employment through 1920.[xxxi] By 1930, Luke rented a home on Spring Street, and his children had moved away from Luke and Ada’s household.[xxxii] Luke died on November 20, 1932 in Murfreesboro, Tennessee.[xxxiii] Luke was buried in the National Cemetery in Murfreesboro.[xxxiv] Ada Sykes Maney died on June 30, 1951 in Murfreesboro, Tennessee.[xxxv] Ada was buried at Benevolent Cemetery in Murfreesboro.[xxxvi]
