Zabell Maney was born in approximately 1810 in Tennessee.[i] It is unknown where Zabell was enslaved prior to emancipation. Lewis Maney was the only member of the Maney family to have enslaved a man approximately Zabell’s age.[ii] Therefore, Zabell was most likely enslaved on the Maney plantation (present day Oaklands Mansion) prior to the Civil War.
Following the Civil War, Zabell moved into a home in Murfreesboro, Tennessee.[iii] Zabell is living in a household with Elizabeth Maney.[iv] It is unknown how Zabell and Elizabeth were related. Elizabeth was likely Zabell’s wife; however, there is no documentation to clarify their relationship. Zabell was employed as a farm laborer, though it is unknown for whom he was employed.[v] There are no further known records for Zabell Maney. It is unknown what happened to Zabell after 1870.
